2006

2006

Many of my earliest questions came from the inablity of medical providers to understand my history. I began taking notes on cell phones, scanning my medical records and recording my doctor visits audio.

2009 Body as a platform

2009 Body as a platform

My first platform design. A simple link between any techology and my body.

2010

2010

By 2010 I started experimenting in patient communities, using big data services like "Flu near you". I quickly moved to wearable computing and internal body services like "23 and me".

2011

2011

My system was getting too complex to manage.

I organized a routine to

1. Collect - Collect data in a low friction way. Requiring little or no effort to record data.

2. Protect - Categorize my data by life mode.

3. Reflect- Organize the data by weighted importance based on "maslow's hierarchy of needs"

4. Project - Move data into my environment, storage systems and make it available to act upon.

2011 Weighting v1

2011 Weighting v1

My first attempt to weight data was using "Maslow's hierarchy of needs". As i purchased applications, sensors, services or devices, I looked at the "need" in my life for these processes.

2011 Data as a Platform

2011 Data as a Platform

By 2011 I was weighing data by reputation (category and importance) and starting to color code the data within my system.

2012 Going public

2012 Going public

I attended "Cyborg Camp". During the event Amber Case asked me to share my project with the cyborgs! My photos from the event are here.

2012 Going digital

2012 Going digital

By early 2012 it was obvious my entire life was being eaten by software. I quickly expanded my organization system to move data into categories. Many systems would not let me export my data so I would setup fake twitter accounts to "share" my data and then use tools to scrape twitter for my data.

2013 Data management

2013 Data management

Using a combination of Zapier, RSS, ifTTT, yahoo pipes I move data in and out of my life systems. Teemu Arina a biohacker in the nordics has created a great chart to illustrate this flow.

2013 Weighting v2

2013 Weighting v2

My second attempt to weight data was using data by identity type.

Soft data - Any data created where I constructed an identity. Facebook posts, blogging, opinions, reviews.

Hard data - Data that is hard to manipulate like heart rate, respiration, air temperature, light levels, sound decibels. Things that couldn't be enhanced for my image via social media.

Core data - The facts of life. DNA, blood work, Microbiomes.

With the new weighting system, I could validate not only the type of data but verify it's accuracy in the hierarchy of knowledge.

2013 Existence as a Platform

2013 Existence as a Platform

With fully functioning system of data collection, I was able to start programing my environment and phone to send me alerts to change behaviors. The rest is "christory"

Tracking v1

Tracking v1

Much of my early tracking was based on evaluating, weighing and categorizing my data. This system allowed me to make massive changes to my life but left me feeling isolated.

Tracking v2

Tracking v2

Starting in 2014 I needed to adjust my systems to measure more intimate things, heart rate full time, brain waves and breathing. Focusing on the contemplative aspects of my life.

2014 Weighting v3

2014 Weighting v3

By studying Freud and Jung, I remapped Maslow to start to reshape my identity to understand the influence of digital services my mind.

2014 Beyond tracking

2014 Beyond tracking

Could I map mood? By combining data elements in my life and mapping them to my network of newsfeeds, friends and history, could I create a system to up lift my mood. This has been done on a massive scale by Facebook in 2014, it was called a social contagion.  Facebook was a simple hack their have gone on to now allow people to edit their history and relationships. This is a DANGEROUS practice.

Biohacker Teemu Arina has used my system to create a feedback loop of his own based on these tracking principles.

Privacy 2012

Privacy 2012

In 2012 I spoke on stage in London. I allowed all my sensor data to go to the screen above me. During the talk it became obvious that the audience was more interested in me as a "dashboard" than me as a speaker. This talk is available on Youtube.

Privacy 2015

Privacy 2015

Privacy is a social construct. It is an illusion that you have control over your life and the lens of an ego that you consistently work to rebuild. For me, destroying my privacy was the most important thing I constructed.

2011-2014 Data Stories

2011-2014 Data Stories

I would often create complex single photos with my day and share them on instagram or facebook. By 2014 my data stories were combinations of photos, sound, movies and data. Instead of looking at my life through the lens of chronological time, I opted to look at the seasons of my life or what the greeks called "Kairos"

2015 Data Stories

2015 Data Stories

By taking multiple complex data stories and combing them I was able to start to hack my perception of time and space. Recreating "moments" from the past in the present moment.

Tracking v3

Tracking v3

By studying the perception of time on the body, I now create analogy and digital triggers in my day. Much like the movie "inception" I keep a "token" to help move my mood, physical body or mind into altered states of conciosuness.

The Future of Tracking

The Future of Tracking

I created an application called "Compass". It was the result of a collaboration with my employer. Compass was the world's first fully low friction data collection agent that employed  bio, environmental, peer to peer and temporal feedback loops to create meaningful change for individuals, families or populations.
